This piece was written in the fifties for the now-defunct Canadian Home Journal, which at that time was edited by a fine woman named Mary-Etta MacPherson. Mary-Etta and I had what the psychologists call “good rapport,” which simply meant that we vibrated on the same wavelength.

Looking back thirty some years I remember Mary-Etta as being quite old, but then in those days anyone over forty-five seemed old. She was a small woman with sparkling eyes, a ready smile, and a keen sense of humour. She helped me make a living and I helped her get material for her magazine. I liked her a lot.
